The 2nd St Magnus Marathon will take place on Sunday 2nd July 2017 as part of events to mark the 900th anniversary of the death of St Magnus. Following a successful inaugural event in July, 2016 the marathon will return with the added addition of a 10k route. Starting at 10:00am from Kirkwall’s St. Magnus Cathedral, the marathon route follows that associated with the journey undertaken by his followers after the martyrdom of the Viking Earl Magnus to the ancient Christ’s Kirk in Birsay, finishing at the nearby Birsay Community Hall. This is likely to be one of the most friendly, beautiful, and outstanding events of the calendar, to reflect and celebrate this historically significant anniversary.
